{"id":60323,"date":"2024-02-03T03:24:47","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T22:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nabanews.pk\/en\/?p=60323"},"modified":"2024-02-03T03:28:18","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T22:28:18","slug":"pakistan-kicks-off-davis-cup-tie-against-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabanews.pk\/en\/pakistan-kicks-off-davis-cup-tie-against-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan kicks off Davis Cup tie against India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> ISLAMABAD<br \/>\nPakistan tennis ace Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi said Friday he was motivated by the rise of his former doubles partner Rohan Bopanna, ahead of a historic Davis Cup clash against arch-rivals India.<br \/>\nIndia\u2019s Bopanna rose to number one on the ATP rankings after winning the Australian Open last month, becoming the oldest player ever to snag the top spot at the age of 43.<br \/>\nQureshi and Bopanna, dubbed the Indo-Pak Express, paired over a decade ago to break into the top 10 and reach the 2010 US Open final.<br \/>\n\u201cBecoming world number one and winning the Australian Open is a massive achievement and in a way it motivates me as well and inspires a lot of people,\u201d 43-year-old Qureshi told reporters ahead of a first Davis Cup tie against India on home soil since 1964.<br \/>\n\u201cI feel very proud of him, obviously I started my doubles career with him and we made a breakthrough together,\u201d he said, adding their \u201cfriendship will remain forever\u201d.<br \/>\nBopanna is not part of the visiting Indian camp, having retired from the Davis Cup last year.<br \/>\nThe last tie between the two countries, which have fought three wars since they were forged out of violent partition 76 years ago, took place in neutral Kazakhstan in 2014 with India winning 4-0.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Indian team just reaching Pakistan is already a win for me,\u201d Qureshi said.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m happy and proud to be a part of it &#8212; that tennis might play a role in mending the ties with India.\u201d<br \/>\nIndia are the strong favourites on paper, but both camps said they expected a competitive clash.<br \/>\nIndian captain Zeeshan Ali &#8212; whose father was part of the 1964 team &#8212; described coming to Pakistan as \u201cemotional\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cThe last time India played against Pakistan 60 years ago my father was on the team and he played three of the matches which he won,\u201d Ali said.<br \/>\n\u201cFor me to be back here in Pakistan as captain of the Indian team is an emotional moment.\u201d<br \/>\nAli added that he hoped the tie would prove positive for tennis.<br \/>\n\u201cIf we can help in any way to spread good friendship and the game of tennis then we would have achieved our goal.\u201d<br \/>\nPolitical differences over Kashmir mean sporting teams from each side rarely visit the other unless taking part in sanctioned multi-national events.<br \/>\nIndian player Yuki Bhambri told AFP the pressure of playing against Pakistan disappears once you step on the court.<br \/>\n\u201cThere\u2019s already a lot of pressure when playing for your country&#8230; I don\u2019t think there is any scope for adding more.\u201d<br \/>\nAsked if Bopanna had considered coming out of retirement to play against Qureshi, Bhambri said: \u201cI think if he had known before (retiring) that there was a possibility I\u2019m sure he would have liked the chance to come here and play.\u201d<br \/>\nTwo singles fixtures are scheduled for Saturday with one doubles and two singles matches on Sunday in the Group 1 playoff on the grass courts of the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD Pakistan tennis ace Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi said Friday he was motivated by the rise of his former doubles partner Rohan Bopanna, ahead of a historic Davis Cup clash against arch-rivals India.
