MOSCOW: The timing of the next round of three-way talks on a settlement of the Ukraine conflict is linked to \u200bthe conflict in the Middle East, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov was quoted as saying on Wednesday, casting doubt on whether the talks will take place next month as initially proposed.<\/p>\n
Ushakov, quoted by Russian news agencies, said Moscow had not yet proposed a specific date for the talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday he \u200choped that \u200ca meeting would take place in Abu \u200bDhabi \u200cbetween \u2060November \u200b6 and November \u206010.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will also depend on the situation on the battlefield and the situation in general. You can see the situation now in the Middle East. It just doesn\u2019t allow us to hold it in the near future. That\u2019s my assumption,\u201d Ushakov told journalists, referring to the regional fallout \u2060from the US-Israeli war on Iran.<\/p>\n
Ushakov also said \u200cthere had been no discussion \u200cof having European negotiators in attendance at \u200bthe next round of \u200ctalks. The leaders of Britain, Germany and France said last \u200cweekend that Europe would play a role in US-mediated talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky on securing a ceasefire.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is absolutely no talk about this, nothing being considered,\u201d Ushakov was quoted \u200cas saying. \u201cWhat there is now is an agreement on resuming three-sided consultations with representatives of Russia, \u2060Ukraine and \u2060the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n
The United States has led efforts to move forward with talks on finding a solution to the 4-1\/2-year-old Ukraine conflict, leaving European countries \u2013 Ukraine\u2019s closest allies and biggest military backers \u2013 largely on the sidelines.<\/p>\n
Ushakov said at the weekend that Europe should be included in discussions as its position could be crucial.<\/p>\n
In comments earlier on Wednesday, Ushakov said the possible participation of European countries in the negotiations was not discussed during Putin\u2019s phone conversation \u200bon Tuesday with Finnish President \u200bAlexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
