WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Thursday Washington is holding talks with \u200bMoscow and Beijing aimed at denuclearizing the countries with the biggest stockpiles of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n
Russia has the most stored nuclear warheads followed by the United States and China, according to the \u200cStockholm International Peace \u200cResearch Institute. The \u200bUS \u200coutpaces \u2060Russia on \u200bits number \u2060of deployed warheads.<\/p>\n
During an interview with Newsmax, Trump said he expects China to \u201ccatch up\u201d with the US within the next five years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe whole thing \u2060is a shame, because I\u2019d \u200clove to denuclearize \u200cif possible, but \u200bwe\u2019re actually talking \u200cto Russia about that, and \u200cwe\u2019re talking to China about that denuclearization,\u201d Trump told the outlet.<\/p>\n
Newsmax reported that Trump had spoken with Chinese President \u200cXi Jinping about denuclearization.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s comments come months after the \u2060Strategic \u2060Arms Reduction Treaty expired earlier this year.<\/p>\n
The New START treaty signed in 2010 allowed one single extension, which was agreed by former President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin for five years.
