WASHINGTON: The United States said Tuesday that it is bringing its charge d\u2019affaires in Managua back to Washington for \u201ccritical consultations,\u201d after Nicaragua failed to approve its ambassador-designate.<\/p>\n
The rejection of Washington\u2019s chosen ambassador Natasha Franceschi \u201cdemonstrates their complete unwillingness to engage in productive diplomatic dialogue,\u201d State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement.<\/p>\n
He noted that charge d\u2019affaires Elias Baumann is returning to Washington at Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2019s instruction.<\/p>\n
The denial, he added, \u201cdemonstrates the hypocrisy of their rhetoric of mutual respect and their desire to engage in political theater.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Central American country is ruled with an iron fist by former Sandinista guerrilla and leftist Daniel Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo.<\/p>\n
They tightened their control over the country after 2018 protests, which left 300 dead, according to the UN.<\/p>\n
In September, Rubio urged international partners to \u201cstop business as usual\u201d with Nicaragua after its legislature voted to ban opposition parties from elections.<\/p>\n
