\nNorth Korea fired an unidentified projectile off its east coast on Sunday, South Korea\u2019s military said, days after Pyongyang reaffirmed its status as a nuclear-armed state. The launch came eight days after North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards the East Sea \u2014 also called the Sea of Japan \u2014 as part of what it later described as a joint firepower drill.
\nIt also followed Pyongyang\u2019s rejection this week of a resolution by the UN nuclear watchdog demanding that it halt its nuclear activities. \u201cThe North has fired an unidentified projectile into the East Sea,\u201d South Korea\u2019s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
\nThe office of the Japanese prime minister also confirmed the launch, saying on X that the projectile was a \u201csuspected ballistic missile\u201d. Japan\u2019s defence ministry later said the projectile had \u201calready fallen\u201d, without giving further details.
\nNorth Korea accused \u201chostile forces\u201d of seeking to end the country\u2019s nuclear programme during this week\u2019s General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). A foreign ministry spokesperson said the IAEA resolution \u201chas no effect on the DPRK\u2019s position as a nuclear weapons state\u201d, using the acronym for North Korea\u2019s official name.
\nNorth Korea has legally enshrined its status as a nuclear-armed state, with its leadership declaring the country\u2019s atomic arsenal permanent and irreversible.
