SEOUL: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung called on Saturday for talks with \u200bNorth Korea to pursue peaceful coexistence, saying Seoul would seek safeguards to prevent conflict and noting the need to replace the peninsula\u2019s armistice with a \u201cpeace regime.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a speech marking the anniversary of Korea\u2019s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Lee said \u200cthe two \u200cKoreas should hold a sit-down \u200bfor \u200ccoexistence.<\/p>\n
He \u2060urged \u200bdialogue between \u2060North Korea and concerned parties to end the 1950-53 Korean War, which was stopped by a ceasefire, not a peace treaty, and said discussions could also explore effective measures to curb Pyongyang\u2019s nuclear \u2060capabilities.<\/p>\n
Lee said Seoul would take preemptive \u200cand sustained \u200csteps to ease tensions and build \u200blayered safeguards to \u200ccontain escalation.<\/p>\n
Lee\u2019s call largely builds on his \u200cpledge last year to respect North Korea\u2019s system and seek peaceful coexistence with Pyongyang.<\/p>\n
Ties between North and South Korea remain frozen. North Korean leader \u200cKim Jong Un has abandoned Pyongyang\u2019s reunification policy, has described the \u2060South \u2060as its most hostile state and ordered stronger frontline defenses.<\/p>\n
North Korea has rebuffed Lee\u2019s engagement offers, criticized Seoul\u2019s plan for nuclear-powered submarines and denounced joint US-South Korean military drills as provocations.<\/p>\n
