LONDON: Britain\u2019s University of Cambridge said Wednesday it has launched a probe into one of its professors who has been engulfed by plagiarism accusations ahead of the release of his memoir.<\/p>\n
The controversy around Jason Arday \u2014 who made headlines when the university appointed him as its youngest black professor in 2023 \u2014 has snowballed after allegations he plagiarised parts of his PhD thesis.<\/p>\n
Questions have also emerged about some of his stated achievements, with Arday and his defenders claiming racism has motivated parts of the scrutiny.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe University of Cambridge has begun an investigation following new information about Professor Arday\u2019s academic qualifications and honorary appointments,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeparately, there remains (sic) a number of ongoing complaints regarding academic misconduct, which are being handled in line with our misconduct in research policy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The storied British university noted it was \u201cfully aware of the public commentary and concerns around this matter\u201d while stressing its probe must be \u201cthorough\u201d and that it would \u201csupport\u201d Arday.<\/p>\n
In June, Cambridge had defended him, claiming \u201ca vile campaign to undermine his credibility\u201d and insisting plagiarism claims regarding his \u201cthesis and journal publications\u201d had been probed and dismissed by \u201cthe relevant institution\u201d and journals.<\/p>\n
It did not specify Wednesday what new information had prompted its investigation.<\/p>\n
Separately, Cambridge\u2019s Jesus College \u2014 where Arday is a fellow \u2014 said it was starting its own parallel probe.<\/p>\n
