So our response \u200cmust evolve just \u200cas quickly,\u201d Hadja Lahbib, the EU\u2019s Crisis Management Commissioner, \u200ctold \u2060Reuters. \u201cWe must prepare \u2060for risks before disasters strike, and not simply react afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lahbib said it was not enough to just purchase more firefighting equipment, and that countries should also be investing more of their EU funding in forest management practices that reduce wildfire risk, and should better educate citizens on \u201cwhat behavior they absolutely must avoid,\u201d to reduce fire risk.<\/p>\n<p>Around 90 percent of wildfires are started by human activities, such \u2060as campfires or discarded cigarettes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS: The European Union\u2019s response to wildfires needs more funding, greater focus on forest management and enhanced education about fire risk as the climate changes, the head of the bloc\u2019s crisis response said, as France and Spain battle deadly blazes.
