SEOUL: The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attacked the bloc of Southeast Asian nations on Monday for seeking a denuclearised Korean peninsula, blasting the position as \u201cstupid and foolish.\u201d<\/p>\n
At its annual regional forum last week, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) expressed \u201cgrave concern\u201d over Pyongyang\u2019s ongoing nuclear weapons development and stressed the importance of dialogue \u201cto realize lasting peace and stability in a denuclearised Korean Peninsula.\u201d<\/p>\n
North Korea has long insisted on its right to nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programs, although they are forbidden under the terms of UN Security Council sanctions. It enshrined its nuclear status in its constitution in 2023.<\/p>\n
Kim\u2019s sister Kim Yo Jong said in a statement carried by state news outlet KCNA that she expressed \u201cstrong dissatisfaction with the forum\u2019s undisguised hostile attitude of going along with the US trumpeting about \u2018denuclearization\u2019\u201d and ignoring North Korea\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a failure in strategic thinking and logic and a manifestation of a stupid and foolish wild dream to still adhere to the \u2018denuclearization of the Korean peninsula\u2019 which had already lost its meaning conceptually and practically,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
ASEAN should guard against \u201cbeing misused as a hired mouthpiece for the US,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
In June, Kim Yo Jong \u2014 a key player in the North\u2019s communications and foreign policy \u2014 said in a statement that North Korea\u2019s nuclear weapons program is \u201cthe line of no retreat.\u201d<\/p>\n
