\u201cLONDON: Britain\u2019s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he may \u201ctake a different opinion\u201d from US President Donald Trump and will \u201cput Britain\u2019s interest first\u201d when dealing with the American leader.<\/p>\n
In excerpts released Sunday of a BBC interview conducted Friday, Burnham said his first call with Trump held just hours after he replaced Keir Starmer in Downing Street on Monday was \u201cwarm.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously we will continue to build the relationship as we go forward\u201d Burnham told the broadcaster, in his first media interview since taking power.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a changing world… and you just have to obviously call things as they develop.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t at any point say that I won\u2019t take a different opinion from him, that I will need to voice a different idea that is right for Britain. And I will do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Burnham, 56, a veteran figure within center-left ruling Labour who was the mayor of Greater Manchester in northern England for nine years from 2017, twice declined to directly answer whether he trusts Trump.<\/p>\n
The UK\u2019s new leader also insisted he would \u201cof course\u201d be willing to call the US president out if needed.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have to defend your own national interest before anything else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what you\u2019re required to do if you\u2019re to do this job properly. I will always put Britain\u2019s interest first.\u201d<\/p>\n
Following Monday\u2019s phone call, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that Burnham \u201chas got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He pledged his country \u201cwill be there to help.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, in remarks last month the US leader had branded him \u201cextremely liberal.\u201d<\/p>\n
