\nThe president of the Spanish football league, Javier Tebas, accused Fifa of acting \u201cirresponsibly\u201d following the announcement of discussions regarding a possible 64-team World Cup in 2030, in an interview with an Italian sports daily published on Tuesday.
\nTebas also said that Fifa president Gianni Infantino\u2019s time was \u201cover\u201d, telling La Gazzetta dello Sport that there is a \u201csystem that is fundamentally flawed\u201d, which has allowed him to lead football\u2019s global governing body for a decade.
\n\u201cThe football industry is not just about the World Cup, however important it may be,\u201d he said.
\n\u201cThey are destroying the football industry \u2014 which generates tens of thousands of jobs \u2014 for an event that lasts 40 days and involves only a minority of players.\u201d
\nAt the Fifa World Cup opening ceremony in June, Infantino mentioned \u201cdiscussions about expanding to 64 teams\u201d for the World Cup\u2019s centenary in 2030, which will be co-hosted primarily by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina also welcoming some matches.
\n\u201cWe have repeatedly expressed our concerns about the competition calendar. And now they want to organise a 64-team World Cup,\u201d Tebas added, emphasising that \u201cit is the domestic leagues that keep this sport alive\u201d.
\n\u201cWe need fewer national teams and better protection for domestic football at all levels. They don\u2019t realise this and are making decisions irresponsibly,\u201d Tebas added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
