NEW YORK: New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said late Tuesday that the city would not be able to execute an arrest warrant issued by the world\u2019s top war-crimes court for Israel\u2019s Benjamin Netanyahu, but urged the federal government to do so.<\/p>\n
In the video Mamdani described the Israeli prime minister as a \u201cwar criminal\u201d and said he is not welcome in New York City.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant,\u201d he said in a video posted on X. \u201cThe federal government however does and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant,\u201d he added, referring to the International Criminal Court.<\/p>\n
Mamdani had told the New York Times earlier this month that he and the city\u2019s legal department were discussing arresting Netanyahu if he comes to New York City for the UN General Assembly in September.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump on Monday told Netanyahu in a social media post that he \u201cwill not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America.\u201d The post did not directly mention Mamdani.<\/p>\n
Mamdani had said throughout his mayoral election campaign last year that he would seek to order the city\u2019s police to arrest Netanyahu under the criminal court\u2019s warrant over Netanyahu\u2019s role in the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n
In his video message Tuesday, Mamdani said his administration has reviewed all avenues available and determined the city can\u2019t execute the arrest warrant.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to be equally clear, Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the UN, responded by telling the mayor \u201cenough.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were elected to serve New Yorkers, not Hamas\u2019 propaganda,\u201d he said in a statement on social media. \u201cDo your job!\u201d<\/p>\n
The world\u2019s top war-crimes court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and others in 2024, accusing them of crimes against humanity in connection with the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n
