Shares of the social media giant pared losses slightly after the news and closed down more than 2 percent amid a wider tech selloff on Friday. They were down marginally in extended trading.<\/p>\n
Such a deal would help Meta diversify \u200cbeyond advertising by generating \u200crevenue from its infrastructure and \u200bcompeting \u200cwith neocloud \u2060firms \u200bsuch as \u2060CoreWeave and Nebius, as growing adoption of advanced AI tools boosts the need for computing capacity.<\/p>\n
The Claude Code creator would pay Meta in monthly increments over the two-year period, although the terms remain subject to change, the source said, adding that the companies would be able to exit \u2060any agreement early.<\/p>\n
IPO-bound Anthropic had proposed the \u200cdeal in June and \u200cMeta is considering it, the source said, \u200badding that the talks \u200chave become complicated since Meta does not have a \u200cbusiness selling its computing power.<\/p>\n
The discussions are in their early stages and may not result in a deal, according to the source.<\/p>\n
Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, \u200cwhile Anthropic declined to comment.<\/p>\n
The potential agreement echoes a strategy recently pursued by Elon \u2060Musk\u2019s SpaceX, \u2060with whom Anthropic struck a deal in May to tap the full computing power of its Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee.<\/p>\n
At Meta\u2019s shareholder meeting in May, CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said entering cloud computing was \u201cdefinitely on the table,\u201d noting that firms were approaching Meta \u201calmost every week\u201d to buy access to its AI models or spare computing power.<\/p>\n
